Rocks are the earliest design trend — paleolithic cave dwellers painted images onto them, the Romans chiseled them into statues and the Egyptians constructed pyramids out of them. Today, we think of decorating with natural elements as a way to lend an organic feel to our living spaces.

When interior designer and HGTV star Jo Alcorn was approached by her clients for a basement renovation, she was handed the unusual task of exposing the bedrock beneath it.
