Universities come in all shapes and sizes, but we don’t think we’ve ever seen a campus as green as the new FPT University site in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City.

Vo Trong Nghia Architects designed the campus with the aim of creating a space for harmonious interaction between people and nature, and based on the renderings released so far, the firm has definitely succeeded. The school will be absolutely covered in lush greenery, and will have plenty of outdoor gathering spaces where students and professors alike will be able to take a break from the educational grind.

First announced last summer, the campus is now under construction, with completion scheduled for 2017. Once finished, the 22,500-square-meter site is guaranteed to stand out — Vo Trong Nghia Architects has said that greenery currently covers only 0.25 percent of Ho Chi Minh City.

“To engage the city in a different way, FPT University appears as an undulating forested mountain growing out of the city of concrete and brick. This form creates more greenery than is destroyed, counteracting environmental stress,” the firm explains in a brief on the campus.

Aside from being literally green, the campus has been called a “landmark building for sustainability,” and will have plenty of environmentally friendly features. For instance, its many trees will help cleanse the air, and by producing shade will help reduce energy consumption at the university.

The completed site will replace the existing Ho Chi Minh City campus of FPT University, and will have room for 5,000 students, up from 2,000 currently. The school’s two other campuses are located in Hanoi and Danang, and Vo Trong Nghia Architects also designed the administrative building at the Hanoi location.
