The multi-phase revitalization of Toronto’s Regent Park led by a partnership between Toronto Community Housing and The Daniels Corporation has seen the neighbourhood transform into a vibrant mixed-use community with new condominiums, affordable housing and retail and community spaces. The latest addition to the neighbourhood is The Sumach by Chartwell, a $100 million, state-of-the-art urban rental retirement residence developed by Chartwell Retirement Residences, Welltower Inc. and The Daniels Corporation.

The announcement was made yesterday in Regent Park inside the Paintbox Bistro on Dundas Street followed by an official groundbreaking ceremony on the site.

“The Daniels Corporation is proud to partner with Chartwell Retirement Residences on its first high density independent living project in the GTA with The Sumach by Chartwell,” said Martin Blake, Vice President of The Daniels Corporation. “This project is the type of pioneering concept which will be a very valuable addition to the neighbourhood and compliments our dedicated efforts of revitalizing Regent Park into a dynamic and multi-generational community.”

“This private venture is the newest addition to Regent Park’s revitalization that is transforming this community to a diverse, mixed-use neighbourhood with new amenities and community services,” added Greg Spearn, President and CEO (Interim) of Toronto Community Housing.

The project aims to address the challenges of a shifting demographic that will see the population aged 75 and older more than double in the next 20 years. When completed in September 2018, the development will add 332 units consisting of studios, one bedroom suites, two-bedroom suites and townhomes.

The residence will be geared towards active retired adults seeking maintenance-free living and social engagement with like-minded individuals. Residents will be able to customize their services and activities — including meal plan options — based on their personal interests and abilities.

“The Sumach by Chartwell is our first large-scale project in Ontario offering a wide variety of amenities and activities on an à la carte basis, making this living option much more affordable in comparison to an all-inclusive retirement living model prevalent in the province today,” said Brent Binions, President and CEO of Chartwell Retirement Residences. “We expect that this state-of-the-art, urban development located in the vibrant Regent Park neighbourhood will generate significant interest as we continue to expand Chartwell’s service offering.”
