Born and raised in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, Ron Joyce left the small Maritime village at the age of 16 and moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he would later meet a young hockey player and donut shop owner named Tim Horton. The two formed a close friendship and became business partners when Joyce opened two more “Tim Hortons” franchises, in what would eventually become the most popular restaurant organization in Canada.
In the late 90s, the successful entrepreneur had a vision to build a luxury resort that would transform rural Nova Scotia while simultaneously helping the depressed local economy. This led to the creation of the 1,150-acre Fox Harb’r Resort, situated along the Northumberland shoreline, just north of Tatamagouche.
“Ron had two motivators on why he wanted to build Fox Harb’r,” said Kevin Toth, President of Fox Harb’r Resort. “Fox Harb’r is the largest employer on the North Shore and so he wanted to contribute to the local economy and well-being of the people of Nova Scotia. Second, he wanted a place where he could come home and enjoy spending time with friends and family.”
Since opening in 2000, the resort has become world renowned for its award-winning golf course, luxurious guest suites, private jet port and airstrip and exemplary amenities that include a rejuvenating spa, fine dining establishments and a variety of sports and recreational activities. Combined with its tranquil environment, breathtaking views and quality services, Fox Harb’r often leaves guests wishing for a longer stay. And that has been the inspiration behind the launch of Harb’r Stone Village by Fox Harbour Developments, an exquisite enclave of architecturally-inspired and meticulously crafted homes.
The development is the first phase of a larger master plan that will see a total of 257 new residential units constructed over a 10-year period. The plan calls for a mix of duplexes, cottages, and estate lots in addition to more amenity offerings including an equestrian centre, conference centre, multilevel inn and expanded golf courses.
“Last October I worked with a number of planners and developed a long term master plan for the resort which was approved by Ron Joyce,” explained Toth. “The infrastructure is already here and we also have a substantial long term development trust fund in Mr. Joyce’s estate, so there’s absolutely no debt on this property.”
To learn more about the community, BuzzBuzzHome News travelled to rural Nova Scotia to tour properties that are already for sale and experience the impressive amenities and generous hospitality.
The first phase of Harb’r Stone Village consists of a total of 73 units with a mix of executive townhomes and detached homes on fully-serviced, half acre lots complete with beautiful views of the rolling greens and Northumberland Strait.
Priced from $525,000 to $749,000, the townhomes are available in two unique designs with each offering over 4,100 square feet of living space, three to four bedrooms and generous master retreats with spa-like ensuites.
At 147 Harbourside Drive (lot 65), a private entry court leads into a bright two-storey foyer lined with marble tiled floors. The open concept layout provides clear sight lines to adjacent rooms and golf course views through large floor to ceiling windows. The main floor features several living areas that are perfect for entertaining including an expansive living room, formal dining room with a two-sided fireplace and an L-shaped kitchen with an island and a wall of pantries for storage.
Upstairs, the spacious master bedroom is the perfect retreat with a curved wall of windows, walk-in closet, outdoor balcony, and a luxurious six-piece ensuite with dual vanities, soaker tub, bidet and separate stand-up shower.
Each townhome is also available for fractional ownership making them the perfect solution for family vacations or executive retreats. The program allows purchasers to live in the home for a total of 12 weeks annually and costs from $169,000 to $215,000 depending on the unit.
We also experienced a sample of Fox Harb’r’s detached offerings with a visit to Seagrove, a 4,344 square foot, four bedroom custom-built detached home on lot 44. Its New England-style architecture with an angled three-car garage, surrounded by a flagstone patio and stunning landscaping, makes a great first impression.
Entering the home, you’re immediately greeted with a magnificent two-storey great room accented with designer furniture, arched windows and light-coloured hardwood floors. Taking centre stage is a 36-inch, two-storey stone-clad fireplace that leads the eyes up towards the high vaulted ceilings.
To the right of the great room is the dining room, breakfast room and a modern country kitchen. The kitchen features custom wood cabinets, stone countertops, a stainless steel barn sink and top-of-the-line appliances, including a panelled fridge and dishwasher. The master bedroom is located on the other end of the main floor and includes an extra wide walk-in closet, double door access to the rear porch, and a deluxe ensuite with a water closet, soaker tub, dual vanity and standup shower. Upstairs are two more bedrooms, a four-piece bathroom and a 24-foot by 13-foot bonus room with its own ensuite.
Those looking for even more space can look no further than the 6,479-square-foot Edgewood on lot 25. Perched upon one of the high points of the resort, the custom-built detached home offers exceptional views of the surrounding golf course and the Northumberland Strait.
The Craftsman-style home is characterized by its cedar shakes, gabled roofs, and an exposed beam porch. And while the exterior is surrounded by lush landscaping and beautiful stone walkways, it’s the home’s interior that really stands out.
Comprised of British Columbia timber firs matched with elegant hardwood floors, the stunning interiors take resort living to an even grander scale. Natural light floods the open concept spaces while the soaring 22-foot ceilings add dramatic visual appeal. The great room boasts a two-storey stack stone fireplace and the adjacent gourmet kitchen and dining room make it an ideal home for entertaining family and friends.
This exceptional home features a main floor master bedroom with an enormous walk-in closet, and a sumptuous ensuite with a water closet, whirlpool tub flanked by his-and-her vanities, and an oversized seamless glass shower with two rain showerheads and body jets. On the second floor are two more bedrooms with a shared bathroom and a catwalk that connects to an open loft area which can be used as a fourth bedroom in the standard plan.
To ensure a smooth and stress-free home building experience, the team at Fox Harb’r Resort will take purchasers through every step of the process from lot selection to choosing furnishings and finishes. Purchasers have the option of creating customized floor plans and elevations with the help of the design team, or they can bring their own floor plans should they already have one in mind.
Living on a resort has its benefits and Fox Harb’r doesn’t disappoint with its superb list of membership privileges. Residents will have full playing privileges and access to all resort amenities and activities including fly fishing, clay shooting, kayaking, tennis, volleyball and mountain biking just to name a few. Another amenity is the 25-acre vineyard at Fox Harb’r where homeowners will have their own section and be able to partake in the growing and harvesting of the grapes.
The resort also has two popular restaurants within the property including the Cape Cliff Dining Room — Atlantic Canada’s first Ocean Wise restaurant. Created by the Vancouver Aquarium to educate and empower consumers about sustainable seafood, the program works directly with restaurants and suppliers to ensure they have the latest information on sustainable seafood and to help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions.
Headed by Chef Shane Robilliard the culinary team at Cape Cliff have put together a seafood menu sourcing the freshest sustainable ingredients including vegetables from Fox Harb’r’s very own greenhouse overseen by horticulturist, Michael Steward.
“The seafood bounties here in Nova Scotia are amazing. We even have two stocked trout ponds on the property, and I sometimes catch the fish on the menu myself,” said Chef Robilliard, who is also Director of Food and Beverage at Fox Harb’r. “Our menu is varied, as well. We raise our own pheasants, and we offer beef, chicken and other proteins.”
Of course, the major landmark is the championship golf course designed by renowned course architect and Golf Hall of Fame member, Graham Cooke. With a Fox Harb’r golf membership, valued at $75,000, included with every home purchase, residents will have access to 18 holes surrounded by sheltered forests, rich fescue, expansive wetlands and deep rock-lined lakes. Set along the shoreline, the par 3 golf course is equally as impressive and provides the perfect opportunity to sharpen your short-game skills.
Even more golf experiences await thanks to a recent partnership between Fox Harb’r and Pacific Links International which links Fox Harb’r to a worldwide network of golf clubs.
“By joining with PLI, Fox Harb’r members will have access to golf courses around the world,” said Toth. “With over 80 Affiliate, Reciprocal Access and Preferred Access clubs internationally, the partnership between Fox Harb’r and Pacific Links opens a whole world of golf to our members and residents. With Pacific Links planning expansions into the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Korea, Portugal and Spain, that world is only going to get bigger.”
Finally, after a long day on the green, golfers can retreat to the Dol-’As Spa and indulge in a therapeutic massage, Swiss cellulotherapy, or a relaxing dip in the olympic-sized swimming pool, mineral pool or hot tub.
Current prices at Fox Harb’r range from $195,000 — for a fully serviced, half-acre home site to build your own custom home — to $1,595,000 for the move-in ready Edgewood.
Whether you’re looking for a primary dwelling or a getaway retreat, Fox Harb’r offers an unmatched ownership experience steeped in nature, breathtaking views, and Maritime charm. And with its 10-year master plan now in the works, this is only the beginning of Ron Joyce’s ultimate vision for his oceanfront community.
