After taking centre stage as the official athlete’s village of last summer’s Pan Am Games, the Canary District is now in the process of being converted into a vibrant mixed use urban centre. When completed, the 35-acre project by Dundee Kilmer Developments Limited will be a true example of a “master-planned community” with thousands of new residential units, an 82,000 square foot YMCA, 18-acre park and a lively pedestrian boulevard lined with shops, restaurants and cafes.

The developer has already secured a diverse group of retailers centred around the theme of health and wellness including Dark Horse Espresso Bar, Fuel Plus, OpusGlow Concept Spa, Pizza e Pazzi, Tabule Middle Eastern Cuisine, The Running Room and Think Fitness Studio.

Last week, four more businesses were announced as part of the first phase of the community’s retail component. These include Gears Bike Shop, offering everything from mechanical services to cycling accessories; Sukothai, a critically acclaimed authentic Thai restaurant; Tori’s Bakeshop, a popular eco-friendly and all natural organic bakery and East Side Meats, a new and innovative butcher shop offering locally sourced, top quality meat and seafood products flavoured by home made marinades and spices.

“We are delighted to welcome these new retailers,” said Jason Lester, President at Dundee Kilmer. “We believe this mix of services is testament to and evidence of the healthy lifestyle of Canary District residents and the overall positive well-being of this exciting and engaged neighbourhood.”

In order to secure the GTA’s top locally-owned and operated businesses, Dundee Kilmer partnered with LiveWorkLearnPlay Inc., a leading international real estate and advisory firm that specializes in the planning, development and implementation of large scale mixed-use communities across North America.

“These newly announced retailers continue to reflect our business approach of choosing the best and most appropriate operators that fit within the vision of a project, which in this case is the health and well-being vision for The Canary District,” said Rob Spanier, Partner and Principal of LiveWorkLearnPlay.

“We are attracting the ‘best of the best’ local retail operators which is in turn building a very attractive mix of services and experiences to complement this unique community. Retailers appreciate our deliberate approach to retail curation and business planning as ultimately, it helps to ensure their long-term success at a location, which is beneficial to their business, the developer and the community at large.”

In addition to the wide selection of shops and services, residents of Canary District will have convenient access to the brand new Cooper Koo YMCA situated on the northwest corner of the site. The state-of-the-art complex will feature youth and community spaces, a gym, swimming pool and fitness studios.

The community will also be home to a brand new eight-storey, 500-bed George Brown student residence, as well as the 18-acre Corktown Common Park complete with a multi-functional pavilion, dog runs, soccer fields and walking trails.

Suites at Canary Park Condos start at $241,900 and feature nine foot ceilings, high quality engineered wood floors in main living areas and quartz countertops in kitchens and bathrooms. A stainless steel appliance package with a slide-in range, hood fan, microwave and fully integrated refrigerator and dishwasher is also included.

Prospective homebuyers interested in Canary District can visit the presentation centre located at 398 Front Street East and tour a beautifully decorated two bedroom plus den unit inside Canary Park Condos. Sales centre hours are Monday to Thursday from 12pm to 6pm, weekends from 12pm to 5pm, or by appointment.
