Despite this weekend’s above-average temperatures, the 11th annual Icefest in Bloor-Yorkville went off without a hitch. The event drew thousands of visitors to the neighbourhood, which showcased more than 20,000 pounds of carved ice sculptures. This year’s theme was “Expressions of Love,” with proceeds going towards the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Minto Yorkville Park commissioned an eight foot ice condo tower, which was modeled after the planned 25-storey residential tower that will soon rise at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland Street. “We take pride in integrating our developments in a way that adds value to the whole neighbourhood and, ultimately, brings the community together,” said Amanda Wilson Watkins, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales for Minto. “Taking part in the Bloor-Yorkville Icefest is the perfect way to celebrate culture and engage with the local community.”

The 15th annual Sassafraz Ice Carving Competition took place on Saturday, as 12 of Ontario’s most talented sculptures transformed blocks of ice into dazzling works of art. Children took home “Ice Kiddie Cubes,” which had a surprise toy inside, while families enjoyed making maple syrup taffy in snow. Missed out on the event? Not to worry — weather permitting, the ice sculptures will be on display from now until March.
