If you’ve walked along Yonge Street just south of Yorkville Avenue recently, you may have noticed a strip of boarded up buildings on the west side of the street. Stretching from 836 to 850 Yonge Street, these are the heritage storefronts that will eventually become a part of the much anticipated 1 Yorkville residences by Bazis and Plaza. And while the site may seem to be quiet on the outside, there’s been plenty of action happening inside and to the rear of the buildings.

Over the past several months, the rear portion of the mid-19th century era buildings have been torn down while construction crews have been diligently working on the heritage stabilization of the preserved backsides. The process involved reinforcing, bracing and installing carbon fibre and steel members to specific areas in preparation for future restoration and the next phase of construction.

Now that the rear of the site is all cleared, crews will soon begin the process of shoring and excavation of the pit. When completed in 2018, the first 10 meters of the heritage buildings will be fully restored and will provide ground level retail on the Yonge Street side of the project’s podium.

However, the heritage facades aren’t the only architectural highlight of the development. Soaring 58 storeys high, the Rosario Varacalli-designed tower will feature a dynamic “3D wallpaper” design consisting of ribbons of faceted metal and steel cladding. The exoskeleton is not only eye-catching but appears to transform depending on light conditions, shadows and where it’s viewed from.

Inside, the suites at 1 Yorkville are characterized by luxury features, finishes and amenities one would expect from the prestigious address. The open-concept floorplans were designed to maximize the views with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, nine and ten-foot smooth-finished ceilings and large balconies.

Some of the larger suites offer premium kitchens with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, large walk-in closets and luxurious ensuites.

Standard finishes include pre-engineered flooring throughout, imported porcelain tiles in bathrooms, and gourmet kitchens with quartz countertops, under cabinet lighting, and custom cabinetry by DesignAgency. A full appliance package is also included consisting of a fully-integrated refrigerator and freezer, built-in contemporary electric cooktop and wall oven, integrated dishwasher and concealed microwave and range hood.
