As a colourful wall of corrugated steel rises at 1057 Barrington Street in Halifax over the next year, it won’t be made up of shipping containers from one of the 150 countries the city’s port serves — though it might look like it at first glance.
While the exterior design by Toronto-based firm RAW Design cleverly reflects the city’s seafaring history, the six-storey building signals the arrival of something new and modern for the Halifax as well: it’s the first time new-build, loft-style rental units will be available in the maritime city.
Located in Halifax’s South End, Southport units are bright, open-concept spaces with nine-foot ceilings. These contemporary urban abodes overlook Halifax’s historic downtown skyline and put residents in the heart of a bustling port area that’s at once metropolitan, industrial and communal.
Being on trendy Barrington Street, the 142-unit community counts boutique shops, cafes and pubs as neighbours, and will be built atop 1,800 sq ft of retail space. Meanwhile, the Halifax Seaport, a revitalized arts district overlooking the Atlantic and made up of attractions including a farmers’ market, galleries and restaurants, is also close by.
