North of Highway 401 is Toronto’s Downsview Park, a former military base that is now home to a bevy of sports complexes, greenery and venue spaces. Tucked away in a corner off Keele Street is a row of three greenhouses and a few muddy fields covered with cheesecloth — this is Fresh City Farms, Canada’s largest commercial city farm. The company grows organically on six acres and operates out of one of the greenhouses, which features a thriving aquaponics system. Fresh City works with a handful of local vendors to deliver bags of fresh produce and other groceries to its customers. BuzzBuzzHome visited Downsview Park to learn more about urban agriculture and this groundbreaking business.
