After 36 years in office, the reign of Hurricane Hazel has come to an end. Mississauga’s beloved 93 year-old mayor will step down as of November 30th, to be replaced by Bonnie Crombie, a former Liberal MP and city councilor.
So what does the new mayor have in mind for the growing city? A total transit overhaul to ease congestion and reduce commute times. Downtown Erin Mills Condominiums by Pemberton Group will be serviced by the new rapid transit lines, thanks to its central locale on Eglinton Avenue West and Metcalfe Avenue.
On November 17th, the city will begin service at four stations along the Mississauga Transitway — an east-west bus transit route, which will have its own dedicated lane. The Erin Mills station is set to open in 2016 and will include a heated/air conditioned waiting area, parking, heated platform shelters and bicycle storage. This is welcome news for residents of Downtown Erin Mills, as the condominium is slated for occupancy in the spring of 2016.
Crombie hopes to implement all-day, two-way frequent GO Train service on all three Mississauga lines. The Ontario government has said this will take ten years, but the mayor-elect has stated that she will work with the province to ensure the project is put into action as soon as possible.
The city also plans to create a regional express rail to make GO service more accessible — building 11 additional stops along the Mississauga-Milton line will allow commuters to walk or bus to the nearest station. Additionally, electrifying rail cars will help to reduce the time delay at stops.
Crombie has promised to speed up plans for the Hurontario-Main LRT, aimed at alleviating overcrowding on 19 Hurontario — Mississauga’s busiest bus route, which transports 25,000 passengers daily. Finally, a full scale review of Mississauga’s transit system will help to identify problems and improve efficiency.
Residents of Downtown Erin Mills can expect to reap the benefits of Mississauga’s rapid transit expansion project. The 18 storey, 198 unit condominium tower is currently in pre-construction across the street from Erin Mills Town Centre. One bedroom, one bedroom plus den, two bedroom, two bedroom plus den and three bedroom units are currently available, priced from the low $300,000s.
The master-planned community will include social and recreational amenities such as an exercise room, sauna, steam room, yoga/pilates studio, barbecue area, pool, party room and a concierge. Interested buyers are invited to visit the sales centre at 4635 Metcalfe Avenue in Mississauga.
