Shipyeards proposal north vancouver

So you know that Trophy and Atrium make up the attractive residential component of the Pier master-planned community in North Vancouver. And you’re intimately familiar with the project’s desirable waterfront location — close to shops, services, restaurants and the SeaBus — but did you know the neighbourhood is looking to welcome even more world-class amenities in the years to come?

The City of North Vancouver is considering a $25-million plan to redevelop the area just east of Lonsdale Quay (Trophy and Atrium‘s backyard). Known as “The Shipyards,” the proposal includes a 21,000-square-foot sunken amphitheatre, covered skating rink five times the size of the one at Robson Square, a giant ferris wheel, art installations, outdoor terraces, benches, walking paths, and 81,500 square feet of new retail and dining space which would be open later in the evening.

The proposal is the brainchild of Seattle-based Roger Brooks, who, in conversation with the Vancouver Sun earlier this year, said the area would become “a showcase for all of Canada”:

It would be lit up at night and open late, and [Brooks] predicted it will shine like a beacon to people in Vancouver and beyond, resembling a mirror image of the famous white sails at Canada Place but having far more appeal.

Being open until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. including weeknights, is key for the new North Shore development, [Brooks] said, as other family-oriented places in Metro, such as Granville Island, close at around 6 p.m.

“Most people commute out during the day. The city is closed. Now, all of a sudden, they will have a place to go at night.”

Brooks wants to see programmed activities at least 250 days of the year, so that the outdoor gathering spot isn’t static.

North Vancouver council has approved $250,000 for design work on the redevelopment proposal, with final decisions on the plan to be made next year. If given the go-ahead, construction could begin as early as 2015.

Want to get in on the growing area while there’s still time? Homes at both Trophy and Atrium are now on the market. You can learn more about the Pier master-planned community by visiting the presentation centre at 172 Victory Ship Way in North Vancouver. The facility is open from 12pm to 5pm daily (excepts Fridays).
