Residents at Pemberton Group’s SkyCity Condos won’t need to break into a sweat when looking for new ways to keep fit and healthy. Richmond Hill boasts almost 600 hectares of open space, and is home to a wealth of parks and arenas, golf and ski clubs, and approximately 160 km of bike routes that wind through residential neighbourhoods. This master-planned two-tower condo community offers an abundance of its own next generation recreation activities (see below for renderings). Yet, as any health enthusiast will tell you, food plays a major role in developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Located on Yonge Street at Highway 407, life at SkyCity can be full of farm-fresh food. You’ll be close to a myriad of farmers’ markets and local food vendors, which are often best enjoyed in summer and early autumn, when so many fruits and vegetables are in season.
The York Farmers Market is just a five minute drive from SkyCity and operates year-round. With over 30 stand holders, you can stock up on everything from organic and naturally raised meats, to Ontario fruits and vegetables, honey, eggs, cheeses and freshly made smoothies. Situated at 7509 Yonge Street, the farmers’ market also sells homemade jewellery and soaps.
The Reesor family has lived and farmed in the Markham/Stouffville Ontario area since their arrival from Pennsylvania in 1804. Today, they run two farm-to-table locations: Reesor’s Farm Market in Markham, and Reesor’s Market and Bakery in Stouffville. Head to Reesor’s Farm Market where sweet corn is in season from July to Thanksgiving, plus you can pick your own strawberries and pumpkins or buy them ready-picked. Famous for their home-style baking, Reesor’s offers a great way to spend quality time with the kids in the great outdoors. Situated at 10825 Ninth Line, the farm market is open from June to October.
Farintosh Farm is just 15 minutes from SkyCity at 11858 Warden Avenue. The heritage farm offers locavores acre-upon-acre of freshly grown produce ready to be picked, frozen or eaten that night. Farintosh Farm is comprised of 280 acres of fertile loam, and is dedicated to rotating the 60 acres of vegetables it cultivates yearly to allow for less fertilizer, fewer pesticides and more sustainable farming techniques. Enjoy the country air as you pick your own tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and beans. The farm also houses a market where you’ll be able to purchase honey, and new this year – Anna Marie’s homemade preserves.
Situated in the newly restored Mill, The Stiver Mill Farmers’ Market is less than 10 minutes away and also offers a wide assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables grown by farmers in the GTA community. Located on Station Lane (just off Main Street Unionville), the market is open from 10 am to 4 pm every Sunday from June 29th to October 12th.
After you’re done stocking up your fridge with healthy local foods, invite friends over for a dinner party at SkyCity’s SkyGarden patio, which will feature gazebos, arbours, a fireplace, barbecues stations and an outdoor area. Host a get-together in the party room and get creative with healthy party treats, fresh smoothies and fruit cocktails.
