Behold, the winning entry of Montpellier, France’s “Architectural Folie of the 21st Century” design competition.
From the multidisciplinary architectural team of Sou Fujimoto Architects, Nicolas Laisné Associates and Manal Rachdi OXO, comes “Arbre Blanc” (White Tree), a 17-story mixed-use tower that will be erected near the Montpellier city center.
The 107,640-square-foot project will be comprised of residential units, office space, an art gallery, and bar with a panoramic viewing area. According to DesignBoom, the building was influenced by the city’s fondness for outdoor living:
…balconies gravitate toward the exterior, like leaves fanning out to absorb sunlight. a generous provision of vegetation sees hanging gardens, plants and trees positioned throughout the residential units, imagined as a vertical garden. The tower devises passive strategies throughout its design in order to ensure a comfortable and livable environment that feeds off locally available resources.
The tree-like tower is scheduled for completion in 2017.
