The developer behind Sunset Park’s music-themed Hotel BPM is working on a new hospitality project at 529 President Street in Gowanus.
DNAinfo first reported on RJ Hospitality’s plans for the five-story “boutique” hotel off Third Avenue. The 61-foot-tall building will have 101 rooms and measure about 31,100 square feet, according to permits filed today.
The project will rise on a 164-foot-wide vacant lot near a Holiday Inn Express at 625 Union Street and a Super 8 at 267 Third Avenue. “It’s a perfect location — it’s going to be a hotel block,” RJ Hospitality’s Rajesh Bhagia told DNAinfo. A boutique hotel at 645 Union Street is also in the works.
Bhagia acquired the property in 2007 for $4.8 million, according to public records. The developer first filed plans for a hotel at the site in 2008, calling for an eight-story building with 98 rooms. Although the proposal was OKed, the building never materialized. Then in June 2013, a plan exam application was filed for a five-story, 99-room hotel, with Thomas Gilman as the architect of record.
This time around, Raymond Chan Architect is the design firm of record. We spotted some renderings on interior designer Andres Escobar’s site, but it’s unclear if those are current.
