In East New York, a new seven-story mixed building is in the works for 2501 Pitkin Avenue.
Located between Shepherd Avenue and Berriman Street, the 58-unit development will be designed by Lacina Heitler Architects. The building will have 3,264 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor, according to the plan exam application filed November 8th. Residents will get a gym, bike room and storage.
The development site is currently a vacant, grassy lot surrounded by a chain-link fence. The developer is the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, a non-profit organization that aims to revitalize the Cypress Hills and East New York communities.
The CHLDC is proposing to rezone the stretch of Pitkin Avenue from Shepherd to Berriman. The residential component of the project will be developed in accordance with the Quality Housing Program and include affordable rental units.
Here’s a sketch from the rezoning application:
Fun fact: 2501 Pitkin was once home to a Prohibition-era saloon, where police seized liquor valued at more than $100,000 in 1921. History!
