Photo by ViaMoi via Flickr Ottawa is Canada’s most sustainable major city and the third most sustainable in all North America, according to new research from Corporate Knights magazine.

San Francisco and Washington, DC ranked as the number one and number two most sustainable major cities on the continent, while Vancouver — a city committed to becoming the world’s “greenest” by 2020 — came in at number four.

The survey measures cities based on 28 indicators in five categories that influence sustainability: environmental quality, economic security, governance and empowerment, infrastructure and energy and social well-being.

This was the sixth the “magazine for clean capitalism” conducted the survey and the first time it included American cities.
