Daniels-Erin Mills Market Before the digging and building can begin on a work site, the land often sits empty and unused for quite some time. But the Daniels Corporation is putting the space directly behind the presentation centre for their Erin Mills master-planned community to work.

At the corner of Erin Mills and Eglinton Avenue in Mississauga, the developer has teamed up with Garden Jane, The Cutting Veg and local volunteers to organize the Backyard Farm & Market, a new urban agriculture initiative. Open weekly until the end of October, the space will be animated  by market stalls manned by local and sustainable artistans and farmers.

Apart from providing residents access to a community food hub with healthy, chemical-free or certified organic products, the Backyard Farm & Market will also be a centre for hands-on learning.

There will be a waste-free demo kitchen, compost and compost-education area, micro-farm straw-bale raised gardening beds, sunflower patches plus a field stone labyrinth and kids’ areas.

The area will play host to artistic performances, where audiences can listen to live music from their tree-trunk seats. The Cutting Veg and Garden Jane will also be working with the YMCA and kids from Cedar Glen Day Camp who will sell the produce they grow this summer to help other kids attend camp.

This unique land-in-transition program shows just what can happen when builders team up with community members to re-imagine urban spaces.
