super-tall-skyscraper-NODO-project-1 Visions of tomorrow quite often feature hovercrafts, space pods and the oddly shaped towers of The Jetsons. But few futurists have envisioned what architecture students at the mock firm ANDO | AndaluciaOffice have imagined: a mini-city living in one free-standing, multi-story structure.

Architecture Source outlined the nod to vertical living and increased density. Dubbed the NODO project, the prototype for the community-in-the-sky was floated at the fourth edition of the “International Mock Firms Skyscraper Competition.”

The five University of Seville team-members won second prize for their proposal of what they called a “mutant vertical city.” They envisioned NODO rising from the already super-dense city of Beijing, China.

The mega-building would consist of a singular unit reaching up 150 floors (or 550 metres) and contain pretty much everything a city would have: infrastructure, as well as precincts for housing, office, commercial and public spaces.

The whole system would be based on an adaptable layout. While the vertical communication and facilities core would be permanent, other components would be mobile and moved about as needed. The whole idea seems like a (very tall) city made of  Lego. Thanks to pre-fab modules, each unit or floor could be broken down and reassembled based on the community’s needs. All these movable parts would center around an interior hollow reinforced concrete core.

Seems far-fetched? An extremely tall, module-based skyscraper is already being planned for the Chinese city of Changsha. China Broad Group is ambitiously planning to erect Sky City, potentially the world’s tallest building at 220-stories and 838-metres. It’ll involve pre-fab units for quick construction.

Undoubtedly, the penthouse views from the hypothetical NODO or the soon-to-be-real Sky City project would be spectacular. But you’d definitely need a hovercraft to make your descent to the ground much speedier.
