One of the pillars of The Daniels Corporation‘s Regent Park Revitalization project was to bring new dining and entertainment options to the bustling neighbourhood.

It looks like the developer has made significant headway on that goal, as legendary jazz drummer and former restaurateur, Archie Alleyne will be celebrating his 80th birthday at the opening of the Paintbox Bistro, a new restaurant in the heart of the Regent Park arts and culture scene.

The Canadian jazz icon will perform with his trio on Saturday, January 19th kicking off an epic “Season of Entertainment” to expose the community’s cultural scene to the city. Alleyne will perform at 8pm and will be joined by Stacie McGregor on piano and Artie Roth on bass. Special guests at the performance will include Alexander Brown Cabrera on trumpet and Jackie Richardson on vocals.

Archie Alleyne

Archie Alleyne received the Order of Canada in 2011 and has accumulated a huge number of awards over his illustrious career. Throughout his career, he’s shared the stage jazz legends like Stan Getz, Mel Torme, Chet Baker and Billie Holiday. Torontonians may also recognize Alleyne as the co-owner of the city’s popular soul food restaurant, Underground Railroad, which closed in the 1980s.

If you’re a jazz enthusiast or just plain enthused about the Regent Park Revitalization project, it’s highly recommended that you make a reservation at the Paintbox Bistro in advance of the performance. A three-course dinner and performance package is available for $40 while tickets to only the performance are $15. Call 647 748 0555 to make a reservation.

The Paintbox Bistro is located at 555 Dundas Street East. Check out Paintbox Condominiums and One Park Place, two of The Daniels Corporation‘s projects that comprise the developer’s Regent Park Revitalization initiative.
