In their annual Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, Mercer found Toronto to be the most expensive city in Canada for expatriates living there.
The consultancy surveyed 214 world cities to assess the cost of living for expatriates. Toronto was ranked at number 61 in the world. Other Canadian cities represented among the 214 were Vancouver (63), Montreal (87), Calgary (92) and Ottawa (115).
North America had its fair share of entries on the list, but it seems like the cost of living for an expatriate is relatively cheap on the continent. New York City was the only city to beat out Toronto as most expensive in North America, however, The Big Apple still only ranked at number 33 worldwide.
The top five cities on the list were Tokyo, Luanda, Osaka, Moscow and Geneva. The least expensive city for expatriates to live was Karachi, Pakistan.
So how did Mercer come up with their list? According to the Toronto Star:
“The survey, conducted annually, measures the comparative costs of over 200 items, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.”
