Mattamy Homes founder Peter Gilgan isn’t a household name, but his huge donation to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children might just make him one.

Gilgan donated $40 million, the largest contribution ever made to the hospital.

We have a real soft spot for philanthropy here at BuzzBuzzHome (who doesn’t?) and reading about Gilgan’s huge donation, announced at a press conference on March 7th, was super heart warming.

So why SickKids? According to the Toronto Star, Gilgan’s children were never treated at the hospital but he knows others who have.

“I have relatives and friends whose children have been somewhat raised inside Sick Children’s,” he told The Star. “They are now young adults and doing extremely well and I credit SickKids for a lot of that.”

The donation will support the construction and ongoing operating costs of the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning, located at the corner of Bay and Elm.

This isn’t the first donation Gilgan has made to the hospital and he also made a substantial contribution to Ryerson University for the new athletics centre they’re building in the former Maple Leaf Gardens. The contribution was large enough to get his namesake on the building. It will be known as the Peter Gilgan Athletic Centre.

Way to go Peter! Nothing beats a housing developer who is passionate about charity work.
