Looks like man-made floating islands are all the rage and they may become the go-to vacation spot for the wealthy.

What happened to the good old fashioned days of vacationing near a beach while keeping your feet on all natural land?

The latest addition to the planned man-made islands roster comes in the form of the Atoll Floating Islands, a joint venture by Palmerstone and Donald Starkey Design. It will see the construction of a collection of luxurious island homes known as “Omes”. The homes will travel from the shores of Dubai into the ocean where they’ll basically just float while residents kick back n’ relax.

Each floating island home will have two decks and be at least 32 metres in length. The homes will feature facilities like open air lounges, swimming pools, bars and dining areas.

It looks as though these are basically yachts that resemble homes, but we’ve been puzzling over how these floating homes will handle rough seas. However, one of the Ome designs won an award for concept design at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards, so we’re guessing the designs are sound.

We just wonder if there will be a time when taking a vacation on land near a beach will become retro and then cool again…
