In early 2006, it was widely reported that Keith Richards fell out of a coconut tree while vacationing on a private island in Fiji. After a rather risky emergency surgery, he made a full recovery and then hit the road on yet another gargantuan world tour. As it turns out, this version of events wasn’t completely true, but it raises a point: Stories are always cooler when they take place on a private island.
So get one already!
Here are a few of our favourites as listed at Private Islands Online. All funds in CAD.
St. Thomas, Greece: Hide out in the cradle of Western civilization. This 300-acre jewel is yours for a paltry $20 million. It sits in the Diapori chain in the Saronicos Gulf, an area long-mythologized for its spattering of lush islands amidst shockingly blue waters. Is that the Argonaut you see from your breakfast patio? Nah, just the Onassis family out for a morning cruise.
Koh Som Island, Thailand: Do you have $3.83 million burning a hole in your pocket? Well then, show up Mr. Richards by successfully climbing the coconut trees on your own 3 acres. Then lounge it out on sand so white that it looks like it’s been bleached.
Mombasa Island, Kenya: At 30 acres for $1.2 million, you can’t afford not to snap up this tropical paradise just off the coast of the city of Mombasa. (Does anyone remember the eponymous computer game?) Coral reef and a staggering array of marine life abound.
5 Cove Island, British Columbia, Canada: Sick of living somewhere that doesn’t allow you to gaze at the ocean, islands and mountains all at once? Of course you are. So think about accruing this spot off the coast of Howe Sound, on the Sunshine Coast. In true Canadian fashion, you’re likely to see bears, otters and eagles as you lay on the beach. $2.92 million gets you all 5 acres.
5 Cove Island, British Columbia, $2.92 million
