The Daniels Corporation is teaming up with Citi Foundation and Habitat for Humanity Mississauga in a new concept to help deserving families realise their dream of homeownership.
We made the drive out to Mississauga earlier today to check out what was going on with Daniels’ FirstHome Community project at Destination Drive in Erin Mills.
The initiative involves Habitat acquiring a partially completed townhome within the Daniels community at significantly reduced costs, and then finishing the interior. The townhome is then sold to the chosen family by Habitat with no down payment, and takes back an interest-free mortgage for the full purchase price.
As part of the deal, the selected partner family contributes some “sweat equity” by assisting with the completion of the home – the father gets stuck in above!
Some of the guys from Team Citi on hand to dig in and volunteer – more than 2,000 volunteer hours are going into completing the townhome
A volunteer signs a piece of wooden board which all of the volunteers sign – once finished, the board will be mounted in the attic as a memento of what was accomplished
This is Daniels’ first hook-up with Habitat and they are only too delighted at being part of the initiative.
“Through our FirstHome Communities, we have on ongoing commitment to help make the dream of homeownership a reality for as many people as possible”, says Don Pugh.“We are particularly happy to be able to give back in Mississauga, where our Chairman, John Daniels, was one of the visionaries behind the creation of Erin Mills. Our corporate roots are here, and we have a long history of building in this city”.
We tend to hear about stories such as this in the papers or on TV but actually going to the site and meeting the people behind it and the people who’ll be moving in is something else.
The partner family are heavily involved in various local community initiatives and as such are thoroughly deserving of being part of this fantastic operation. From the smiles on their faces it would seem that they can’t wait to move in!
