Several hundred Toronto East-enders, and some local politicians gathered on Sunday to protest the planned construction of a massive condo development near Victoria Park.
The quarry, which is owned by Sheldon Libfeld’s Conservatory Group, is slated to be the site of a four-building highrise complex containing 1,455 units. Those buildings will include seven towers, each as high as 27 stories. The area is bordered by Victoria Park Ave. to the west and Gerrard St. E. to the south. The proposal would see the area’s density increase by seven-fold.
According to the residents, development is bad planning and will tear apart the fabric of their community. The 20-hectare site on Clonmore Road sits nearby a close-knit community where small streets intersect single-family homes.
Residents are concerned that a zoning proposal from 40 years ago is going to dictate what happens in their neighbourhood.

Residents against a proposed condo development that will add 1,455 units to a small east-end Toronto neighbourhood braved the wind and rain yesterday to send their message to City Hall. A protest organized by a group calling itself Concerned Citizens for Quarry Lands Development saw more than 1,000 people, including local councillors, gather near the intersection of Victoria Park Avenue and Gerrard Street in Scarborough where developer Conservatory Group is planning a seven-tower high-rise complex on a 20-hectare plot of land. “Nobody wants this,” said Mark Brender, president of citizens’ group, who noted that the surrounding neighbourhood is made up mainly of single-family homes. “If we can’t stop this, it’s a huge condemnation of city council … and the leadership of our city.”
Known as the Quarry Lands, the area was approved for high-density development back in 1968, when planners thought that Scarborough Expressway would cut through the area. However, only recently did the Conservatory Group decide to construct condos in the Quarry Lands.
The proposal is currently before the Ontario Municipal Board.
