Melanie Aitken, Canada’s commissioner of competition, fired back at the real estate industry for what she called “personal attacks,” in a court filing with the Competition Tribunal.
Aitken and the Canadian Real Estate Association, which represents more than 100 boards across Canada and 98,000 realtors, have been in a war of words since the commissioner filed an application with the tribunal in February over CREA’s “anti-competitive” behaviour.
The two sides have been battling over the Multiple Listing Service system, which is owned in Canada by CREA and by some estimates is responsible for 90 per cent of the transactions in the country.
