Renowned modernist architecture meets leading contemporary design at The Benvenuto [map], Malen Capital’s striking redeveloped condominium at St. Clair Avenue and Avenue Road.

This condo not only has modernist architecture and contemporary design, but also offers elegant living in midtown Toronto.

Situated on a rise overlooking the city, on a site so rare that was once William Mackenzie’s home and in the 1950s, the apartment-hotel for celebrities and Toronto’s who’s who, The Benvenuto is acclaimed as one of architect Peter Dickinson’s masterpieces of classic modernist design.

A distinguished team of industry professionals enlisted by Malen Capital to uphold Dickinson’s vision while creating modern layouts and amenities includes Gordon Ridgely of Gordon Ridgely Architects and Associates, Les Klein of Quadrangle Architects, John Lloyd of John Lloyd & Associates Landscape Architects, and Bryon Patton of Bryon Patton & Associates.

The wide, shallow suites here were re-designed during the reconstruction, and Patton worked with the layouts to maximize flow and introduce great bathrooms, oversized walk-in closets and grand entertainment spaces. Finishes include exotic hardwood flooring; gourmet kitchens with a pantry, granite slab countertops and the choice of glass or marble backsplash, and large scale marble flooring tile; bathrooms with a marble slab vanity countertops, over-sized cast iron soaker bathtubs, plus marble tile flooring, showers and tub skirts. Most suites offer either a balcony or terrace; many have multiple balconies.

According to Patton, the 1,835 sq. ft. model is designed for a sophisticated professional couple who enjoy art, theatre and travel. The main living area has an art-inspired theme, with fine pieces on display.

“In this suite, we emphasized natural products and wonderful textures. The palette is neutral with blue accents to reference the fantastic sweeping cityscape views. This is about luxury in the truest sense.”

The dark hardwood flooring adds elegance and warmth, and Patton’s selection of furnishings includes a Barbara Barry sofa with a wenge wood frame and camel chenille upholstery, plus two lounge chairs in a Louis XVI design.

The model’s master bedroom is a retreat with pale aqua walls and a carpet in an oatmeal tone.

“The buckskin-tufted suede headboard and tone-on-tone patterned oyster bed linens accentuate the dark walnut night tables and dresser, and the painting by Beverley Hawksley enhances the art-inspired theme. In the master bath, we used Bianco Carrera marble tile and slab with a marble mosaic detail that wraps the room. The double-basin vanity is a furniture piece in wenge with a framed mirror above.” Patton

The second bedroom has the Dickinson touch, with one wall sporting a series of small windows he designed.

“Because of the architectural heritage of the building, we respected modern, clean lines in all the suites to create a timeless backdrop. This cool bedroom is perfect for a guest or university-age child. The second bath is also in Bianco Carrera marble, with one shower wall in a black and irredescent clear glass mosaic.” Patton

Rounding out the model are a powder room and a den, where Patton incorporated a chocolate brown sofa, lounge chairs upholstered in a burnished gold leaf pattern, a desk and games table.

The Benvenuto is located in the desirable St. Clair Avenue and Avenue Road area, not far from the shops of Yonge and Summerhill, trails of the Nordheimer ravine, and charm of Forest Hill Village. Every element of the building has been renewed, including the exterior landscaping and fountain, port-cochère entry, guest suite, corridors and all the buildings mechanical, electrical and fire safety systems. Residents enjoy valet parking and round-the-clock concierge service provided from the beautiful lobby, and the amenities area includes a glass-walled rooftop fitness centre.

Led by respected industry professional Mitchell Abrahams, Malen Capital is an owner and developer of fine residential and retail properties. Mr. Abrahams has extensive experience in the renovation and redevelopment of luxury apartment properties.
