What a difference a year makes in Calgary’s home building industry.

A year ago, the sector was feeling the pinch from an economy that had been dramatically affected by the global financial meltdown.

A year later, there is evidence the economy is coming out of its recessionary funk.

According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., total housing starts in the Calgary census metropolitan area are up in February compared with a year ago — an indication of how far the economy had fallen at the beginning of 2009.
