Building permits for December jumped by almost a third compared with the same period last year, boosted by requests to construct commercial projects in Ontario and Alberta, according to figures released by Statistics Canada on Thursday.
Builders took out $6.2 billion in permits for the month, up 2.4% from November and 32.6% higher than in the same month the year before.
The December increase stems primarily from increases in office building permits in Ontario and Alberta, StatsCan said.
“The increase in the value of permits in December was entirely due to the non-residential sector,” a release said.
