The following is an email I received from some American friends after Canada lost in hockey to America – Americans LOVE this email, they can’t get enough of it…

Subject: Can We Just Annex Canada And Get It Over With Already?

Email Body:
Cmon on Canada. I mean if you can’t even beat us at hockey what’s the point of you guys existing? And spare me the Celine Dion bullshit. Hockey is all Canada had to hang their hat on and now we dominate them at that too.

I forwarded the email to Matthew Slutsky who responded…

Email Body: We may have lost at hockey, but we have a booming housing market…

I thought his comment was very funny. Reason being, that it probably sums up the secret feelings of many Americans. While America suffers the worst economic crisis since the great depression, Canada is cruising along with a booming real estate sector and a highly resilient economy.

This contrast between the US and Canada is definitely not going unnoticed by Americans. Today, The American, a popular online business journal, has as its feature article a piece on Canada’s Marvelous Mortgage and Banking System. According to the article, Canada remains the only industrialized country in the world that has survived the last two years of financial and economic stress without a single bank failure. For their American readers, adding insult to injury, the article provides the following graph of the percentage of mortgages in arrears between the USA vs. Canada:

I like and admire the United States, but I feel a little bad for our brethren to the South right now – their country just isn’t looking too hot. Their economy is a mess, their unemployment rate is sky high, they’re fighting multiple wars (I think we’re helping a little with these), their president is faltering, and I don’t think anybody understands what exactly is going on with their health care system/debate.

And so, to quote my good friend Matthew Slutsky, “We may have lost at hockey, but we have a booming housing market…”
