International retail giant Lowe’s wants to come to Calgary.
It has a development permit application before the city for a large home improvement store and garden centre as part of a larger regional shopping centre in the East Shepard area. “At this time, we have not announced expansion plans or projects outside of Ontario,” said Maureen Rich, spokeswoman for the company. “We have a policy if we haven’t closed on a specific site, we wait until we’ve closed on all real estate matters before commenting on a specific potential site.”
Lowe’s has 14 stores in Canada, all in Ontario, and nearly 1,700 stores across North America, she said, adding two stores are expected to open in Mexico by the end of this year. The interest of Lowe’s in the Calgary market is a strong signal of the confidence the international retail community has in the Calgary retail scene, said Michael Kehoe, an Alberta-based retail specialist with Fairfield Commercial Real Estate Inc.
